چکیده

The next-generation Internet Protocol, initially known as IP Next Generation (Ipng), and then later as IPv6, has been developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to replace the current Internet Protocol (also known as IPv4). To enable the integration of IPv6 into current networks, several transition mechanisms have been proposed by the IETF IPng Transition Working Group. This work examines and empirically evaluates two transition mechanisms, namely IPv6 to IPv4 tunneling and dual-stack mechanism, as they relate to the performance of IPv6. We explore the impact of these approaches on end -to-end user application performance using metrics such as throughput, latency, and host CPU utilization. All experiments were conducted using three dual stack (IPv4/IPv6) routers, an IPv6 router and two ends –stations running Windows 7, loaded with a dual IPv4/IPv6 stack.

Comparison Between IPv4 to IPv6 Transition Techniques

The IPv4 addresses exhaustion demands a protocol transition from IPv4 to IPv6. The original transition technique, the dual stack, is not widely deployed yet and it demanded the creation of new transition techniques to extend the transition period. This work makes an experimental comparison of techniques that use dual stack with a limited IPv4 address. This limited address might be a RFC 1918 ad...

An Incremental Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN) for IPv6 Transition

Global IPv6 deployment was slower than originally expected. As IPv4 address exhaustion approaches, IPv4 to IPv6 transition issues become more critical and less tractable. Host-based transition mechanisms used in dual-stack environments cannot meet all transition requirements. Most end users are not sufficiently expert to configure or maintain host-based transition mechanisms. CarrierGrade NAT (...

Global Mobile IPv6 Addressing Using Transition Mechanisms

The adoption of the Internet Protocol in mobile and wireless technologies has considerably increased the number of hosts that can potentially access the global Internet. IPv6 is considered the long term solution for the IPv4 address shortage problem, but the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is supposed to be very gradual. Therefore, there will be a long time during which both protocol versions will...

DTTS: a transparent and scalable solution for IPv4 to IPv6 transition

IPv4 to IPv6 transition is an inevitable process when deploying IPv6 networks within the present IPv4 Internet. The transition process is complex as it has to deal with issues related to IPv4-IPv6 interoperability including routing, DNS, error handling, etc. In this paper, a new solution named DTTS (Dynamic Tunneling Transition Solution) for IPv4 to IPv6 transition based on dynamic tunneling te...
